Just 90 minutes from Jersey City, Beacon feels like a completely different pace. This small Hudson Valley city has a mile-long Main Street lined with independent shops, great restaurants, and one of the region’s best contemporary art museums.

Getting There

From Jersey City, take the PATH to Penn Station, then hop on the Metro-North Hudson Line toward Poughkeepsie. The ride to Beacon Station takes about 90 minutes and costs roughly $35 round-trip on weekends.

Once you arrive, the bottom of Main Street is just a short walk away and most of Beacon is easy to explore on foot.

Start at Dia:Beacon

If you only do one thing in Beacon, make it Dia Beacon. The museum occupies a former Nabisco factory filled with natural light and massive installations by artists like Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, and Donald Judd.

Plan to spend at least two hours wandering through the galleries. It’s one of the best contemporary art spaces on the East Coast.

Where to Eat + Drink

Beacon Farmers Market (Sundays, 10am–2pm): A great way to start the day with coffee, pastries, and local vendors.

The Roundhouse: Beacon’s most scenic dining spot, with a seasonal New American menu overlooking a small waterfall and creek.

Momo Valley: Himalayan-style dumplings that locals swear by. The spinach and cheese momos are a favorite.

Meyer’s Olde Dutch: A beloved local burger joint with a laid-back vibe and a solid beer list.

Ziatun: A colorful spot serving fresh Palestinian dishes like hummus plates, grilled meats, and bright salads.

Hudson Valley Food Hall: A casual food hall with BBQ, Mexican, Nicaraguan, and ice cream – perfect if you’re with a group that can’t decide on one place.

Shop Main Street

Beacon’s Main Street stretches for more than a mile, so don’t worry about seeing everything. A few favorites:

  • Flora Good Times – houseplants and floral arrangements
  • Hyperbole – art prints, candles, and design-forward gifts
  • Utensil – a dangerous stop for anyone who loves kitchen stores
  • Stanza Books – a cozy independent bookstore
  • Zakka Joy – Japanese stationery, toys, and the famous sock wall

Coming in April 2026: The Beacon Flea Market is launching this spring — a new reason to plan a trip once the weather really settles in.
