Table of Contents

Creative & Movement

Drink & Draw — Monthly, Thursdays

Show up, get a prompt, draw something. No experience required, just a room full of people making art with a drink in hand. Departed Soles hosts this monthly Thursday night session open to all skill levels — BYO supplies. The event itself is free; drinks are on you.

Departed Soles Brewing, 150 Bay Street, Jersey City

The Art of Salsa Dance — Wednesdays starting March 18

Not a one-and-done workshop, this is a multi-week series that actually builds on itself. You’ll start with the fundamentals and work up to partner technique, so by the time spring really settles in, you’ll have moves to show for it. Beginner and intermediate levels both welcome.

SEWcial Meetup — Monthly, Wednesday March 18

Bring whatever you’re working on — sewing, knitting, crocheting, mending, quilting, it all counts. This monthly Wednesday night meetup is less about instruction and more about showing up with your project and being around people who get it. Good for beginners who want low-stakes inspiration and regulars who just want company while they craft.

Learn Something New

American Sign Language with Thyson Halley — February 28 & March 28

Jersey City’s own Thyson Halley, ASL interpreter for two consecutive mayoral inaugurations and a working educator at multiple community programs, is bringing free ASL classes to the Jersey City Library. You’ll cover basic signs, fingerspelling, everyday communication, and get real insight into Deaf culture and accessibility.

Pavonia Branch Library

DAR Genealogy Workshop — March 21

Ever wondered how far back you can actually trace your family? This guided session walks you through archival research databases and historical records so you can start finding real answers. Equal parts educational and genuinely surprising once you start digging.

Priscilla Gardner Main Library, Third Floor

Mental Health Workshop — March 10

Caring for Your Mental Health: Coping with Anxiety and Mood Disorders is a practical, community-focused session. Expect real tools for managing stress and anxiety day-to-day, plus open conversation and shared learning in a supportive room.

Caven Point Beach End of Season Hike — February 28

Last chance to see Caven Point Beach before it closes for spring breeding season, and Liberty State Park is sending it off properly. This collaborative hike through the nature area includes interactive art programs, a naturalist-led talk on local beach ecology, wildlife scavenger hunts for all ages, and free hot cocoa courtesy of Friends of Liberty State Park. HIIT Class — March 14

Short bursts, real effort, and a structured class that will remind your body that winter is officially over. Part of the library’s seasonal fitness series — yes, the library. They’re doing that now.

Communipaw Jersey City Public Library

Yin Yoga — March 24

The counterbalance to the HIIT class. Slower, restorative, focused on flexibility and joint mobility — exactly what you need when everything is starting to thaw out, including you.

Explore Your City

Van Wagenen House Tours — Wednesdays

One of Jersey City’s oldest landmarks, this 18th-century home has survived longer than most things in this city. Free tours and occasional lectures cover Revolutionary War history and the city’s earliest roots. Underrated, walkable, and a genuinely good hour.

298 Academy Street, Jersey City

JC Fridays — March 6

Once a season, Jersey City turns itself into a walkable art festival. Galleries, bars, restaurants, and creative spaces across multiple neighborhoods open their doors for an evening of exhibits, live music, dance performances, and pop-up programming. It’s a great excuse to explore parts of the city you’ve been meaning to get to.

Multiple locations throughout Jersey City

Art21 “Between Worlds” Screening & Discussion — March 25

Mana Contemporary is hosting a screening of Art21’s Between Worlds — a documentary following four internationally acclaimed artists whose work sits at the intersection of colonization, migration, and cultural identity. Sophie Calle, Dyani White Hawk, Lubaina Himid, and Tuan Andrew Nguyen are four wildly different practices unified by one idea: that art can do something about a divided world. Screening is followed by a live discussion.

Worth the Splurge 👀

Save the Powerhouse Walking Tour — Select Saturdays through April

Not free, but genuinely worth it. Preservationist John Gomez leads this community walking tour through Downtown Jersey City centered on the 1908 Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse — the city’s most iconic architectural landmark and a building very much worth fighting for. Tours start at Grove Street PATH and end at the Powerhouse itself.

Meets at Grove Street PATH, Marin Blvd & Columbus Drive — $15 adults, $10 seniors/veterans/students
