Trying something hands-on is one of the easiest ways to break out of a rut, especially in January. You get a calm hour or two to focus, and you walk out with something you made yourself.
DIY Joint (Union City) – A woodworking studio where you can take classes or rent shop time to work on your own projects. On February 10, they’re hosting a beginner class on how to make a piece of furniture – a good one if you’ve never tried woodworking before.
Youssoufiani Atelier (Downtown Jersey City) – A leathercraft studio where teachers guide you step-by-step on different projects. You can make a keychain or a custom luggage tag using real leather – it’s simple and surprisingly fun!
PLNTD (Jersey City) – This beginner-friendly kokedama workshop is a hands-on way to try something new during Dry January. You’ll learn how to wrap a living plant’s roots in soil and moss to create a “moss ball” you can display at home.
Sometimes the easiest way to get out during Dry January is to sit back, watch something good, and let someone else do the performing. Local theaters make that simple, and the shows this month are genuinely impressive.
Nimbus Dance (Downtown Jersey City) – A dance company that puts on powerful, creative shows. From January 30 to February 8, they’re performing ANIMA, a show about people and nature.
Mile Square Theatre (Hoboken) – From February 19 to March 8, this intimate theater is performing The Young King, a thoughtful adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale about a boy learning what it means to be a good leader.
Art House Productions (Downtown Jersey City) – On Monday, January 26, this theater is presenting The Belfry, a staged reading about the mysterious lights that appeared above St. Joseph’s Church in 1921 and 1954 – a story that drew thousands of locals out to see if something magical was happening.
Dancing is one of the easiest ways to meet people during Dry January. You’re moving, laughing, learning something new, and the energy of the room does most of the work for you.
Tapville Social (Downtown Jersey City) – Tapville Social is hosting a Venezuela-themed party on Saturday, January 24 with a beginner-friendly salsa class to get everyone moving. Expect upbeat energy, lively music, and a crowd that’s there to enjoy the night!
Boots and Bones (Downtown Jersey City) – If you’ve ever wanted to try line dancing, Ashley Rose is teaching a honky-tonk–style line dancing class that’s perfect for beginners on Saturday, January 31. No experience needed, no partner needed, and no special boots required (though they’re absolutely welcome).
The Studio (Hoboken) – This dance studio is just for adults, offering everything from ballet and beginner tap to hip hop, heels, street jazz and Broadway jazz. Classes are designed to be welcoming for beginners.
If you’re looking for quieter social events this month, movie meetups, writing groups, and silent book clubs make it easy to get out without feeling “on”.
Classic Cinema Club (Downtown Jersey City) – They’ll be screening, Raising Arizona, on Thursday, January 22, followed by a relaxed talkback with fellow film lovers, moderated by NYU professor Jonathan Bernstein.
Jersey City Writers (Downtown Jersey City) – A free writing community that meets regularly for quiet writing sessions built around short prompts. Writers spend time working on their own projects, with the option to share afterward if they’d like.
Hoboken Silent Book Club (Hoboken) – On Monday February 2, they’re hosting a “blind date with a book” night where readers bring a wrapped book with a few hints written on the outside, then choose a surprise book to read together. It’s a low-key way to discover something new without the pressure of discussion.
