SUMMARY:Introduction to Playwriting
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to write a play? Have you ever thought about trying out a new writing style\, but didn’t know where to start? Start here! Start now! \nJoin New Jersey-based playwright Mikaela Simon to learn the fundamentals of writing a script over the course of this six-session class. Begin your learning with an introduction to structure\, format\, dialogue\, monologues\, characters\, dramatic action\, and storytelling for the stage. Using visual mediums\, take the time to explore theatricality and playmaking. Find out how playwriting differs from other writing styles using the “show or tell” method\, then get the chance to bring your own ideas to life. By the end of the fifth session\, you’ll have your very own scene/scenes from which to expand your work on your own. In your sixth session\, we will share these scenes in a reading for your friends and family. All the world is a stage–it’s time to add your voice to it. \nLearn: \n\nThe structure and formatting of a play\nAn understanding of the elements of a play and how to use them\nThe ability to continue writing long-form work (ten minutes\, one acts\, full-lengths\, etc.)\n\nThis workshop is for adults (18+). \n  \nAbout the Instructor: Mikaela Simon (she/they) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Jersey City\, NJ. Working primarily in the mediums of collage and playwriting\, Mikaela finds that their background in performing arts helps to inform their visual creative process. In 2019\, Mikaela earned her BA in Theatre Arts from Drew University\, where she spent a significant amount of time designing and writing. Her art training began long before that\, at her parents’ kitchen table in Shiloh\, NJ where her art teacher mother would allow her and her younger brother to make messes and experiment with paint\, ink\, scissors\, and glue. This laid a foundation of permission to play\, something she brings with her in all artistic pursuits. When she’s not writing or collaging\, she works as a teaching artist at libraries and schools\, spends time working in exhibition production in museums\, and organizes with Food Not Bombs JC. They love the month of October\, cooking in their crockpot\, and their dogs\, Breezy and Luna.

SUMMARY:Live at Brennan's Jazz Night with JC Jazz Fest
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\nAn exciting night of jazz music in partnership with #jerseycityjazzfestival set in the historic William J. Brennan Court House \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE PERFORMERS \nSwingadelic \nSwingadelic began in 1998 as the neo-swing movement was cresting. Upright bassist Dave Post gathered his jazz & blues playing friends together to play engagements at New York City’s Supper Club\, Swing 46 and Windows On The World\, the former restaurant atop of the World Trade Center. As the swing scene waned the band was able to turn to swing dance groups\, concerts\, festivals\, schools and private engagements to keep active. \nSwingadelic has performed at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing\, NJPAC\, and at many festivals\, including Bele Chere (Ashville NC)\, MusikFest (Allentown PA) the CD 109 Jazz & Blues Festival (Red Bank\, NJ) and the sanofi-aventis JazzFest (Madison NJ). \nThe band plays about 100 dates per year and has traveled from Maine to Atlanta. Swingadelic has maintained two yearslong residencies as a ten piece band at Maxwell’s in Hoboken and Swing 46 in midtown NYC. The band recently appeared on the Apple TV program “Your Friends and Neighbors”. \nSwingadelic has seven CD’s and has been recording for the ZOHO Music label since 2011. Swingadelic CD’s have been in the JazzWeek Radio charts top thirty and garnered many critically acclaimed reviews in jazz publications such as Jazz Times and All About Jazz. \nOur newest ZOHO release is called “Bluesville” a collection of blues and jazz by legendary artists like Duke Ellington\, Count Basie\, Muddy Waters\, Ray Charles\, Ruth Brown and more. \n_____________________________________________________________________ \nABOUT THE VENUE \nPlaced on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and saved from destruction by concerned citizens\, the William J. Brennan Courthouse housed the county courts and offices until 1966\, when it was abandoned and left to crumble. After a complete restoration the building was reopened in 1985 and now houses the county’s civil courts. Today\, the courthouse has regained its former glory and often showcases local arts and music in its beautiful rotunda. \nDoors Open: 6:30 PM \nShow Starts: 7:00PM \nFREE PARKING is available directly next to the Courthouse after 6PM. Parking available on first come first serve basis until full. The Journal Square PATH station is a short walk away. \nTickets $30 \nHC Employee Discount & HC Senior Discount inquire within. \nCall James Rangel at 201-459-2070 xt. 6441 or email jrangel@hcnj.us for more information.

SUMMARY:Camera Obscura
DESCRIPTION:Look to the East\, Look to the West\, the new album by Camera Obscura\, is a revelation. The Tracyanne Campbell-led outfit\, reuniting with producer Jari Haapalainen (Let’s Get Out of This Country\, My Maudlin Career)\, have crafted an album that simultaneously recalls why longtime fans have ferociously loved them for decades while also being their most sophisticated effort to date. \n  \nIt is also the most hard-fought album of Camera Obscura’s career. Following the 2015 passing of founding keyboardist and friend Carey Lander (to whom the penultimate track “Sugar Almond” is addressed)\, the band went into an extended hiatus. They remained in contact\, but their status was uncertain until they announced their return\, having been invited to perform as part of Belle & Sebastian’s 2019 Boaty Weekender cruise festival\, along with a pair of sold-out warm-up shows in Glasgow. Donna Maciocia (keys and vocals) joined founding members Kenny McKeeve (guitar and vocals)\, Gavin Dunbar (bass)\, and Lee Thomson (drums and percussion) for those shows and has since become a regular songwriting partner of Campbell’s. \n  \nRecorded in the same room where Queen wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody\,” Look to the East\, Look to the West feels big\, a widescreen reframing of Camera Obscura’s sound that\, paradoxically\, saw the band go back to basics—there are no string or brass arrangements\, with more emphasis placed on piano\, synthesizers\, Hammond organ\, and drum machines\, and\, perhaps most strikingly\, the group have dropped the veil of reverb that characterized their previous albums. The tinges of country and soul that give Camera Obscura’s baroque take on pop music its bittersweet edge have never been more apparent—guitars shimmer into the distance\, keys haunt\, and Campbell’s voice searches for the heart\, reflecting on love\, loss\, and the passage of time. \n  \nLead single “Big Love” relishes in the space between country rock and prog\, a pining break-up anthem featuring the soaring pedal steel of Tim Davidson. It’s a Nashville Sound heartbreaker\, tackling the complexity of wanting to rekindle a bad relationship with Campbell’s uncanny ability to render the past: “It was a big love\, she said / That’s why it took ten years to get her out of her head\,” she begins. \n  \n“We’re Going to Make It in a Man’s World” was co-written with Maciocia for filmmaker Margaret Salmon’s 2021 film Icarus (After Amelia). (Salmon\, in turn\, shot Look to the East\, Look to the West’s cover photography featuring Fiona Morrison\, who was on the cover of Camera Obscura’s debut\, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi.). Ironic and sincere\, the two navigate the reality of being women in the music industry\, somehow floating over Davidson’s pedal steel and Maciocia’s keys. “The Light Nights” is a swooning song propelled by a western shuffle and killer guitar\, striking a balance between a particularly good honky-tonk joint’s jukebox and a lost gem of California pop music waiting to be discovered in a 7-inch bin. \n  \nCamera Obscura’s uncanny dexterity in juxtaposing genres\, moods\, and emotions is most keenly felt in opener “Liberty Print\,” an elegy that breaks itself open over a crushing synth line. It’s a daringly constructed song\, showcasing Campbell’s command of lyrical narrative that allows space for grief within the structure of pop music. \n  \nLook to the East\, Look to the West is the sound of a band that has grown more confident in its sound and purpose than ever. It is Camera Obscura at their best and most evocative\, an album that completely rearranges the listener’s emotional core\, leaving them sad and exhilarated at the same time. Camera Obscura’s catalog is replete with songs people point to as life-changing\, songs that will stick with them all their lives. Look to the East\, Look to the West has 11 of them; take your pick. \n  \n****************************************************************************** \n  \nSupport comes in the form of a solo set from Admiral Fallow frontman Louis Abbott. The Glasgow based five piece last toured North America back in 2012 following an appearance at SXSW in 2011\, at which they were herald as ‘One to watch’ by NPR’s All Songs Considered as well as being touted as one of Paste Magazine’s favourite bands of the year. \n  \nIn the meantime the band have released 5 critically acclaimed studio albums\, the most recent of which\, ‘First of the Birds’\, released by legendary Glasgow label\, Chemikal Underground\, was written following songwriter Louis Abbott becoming a parent for the first time. \n  \nHaving opened solo for Camera Obscura on a handful of dates on their North American tour in 2024\, including at The Fillmore in San Fransisco\, this is a seldom-seen chance to catch an intimate opening set from the Admiral Fallow frontman\, who will play some brand new material alongside some “classic” back catalogue material. \n  \nFirst of the Birds pull quotes – \n  \n“Heart Swelling Intimacy” – The Scotsman \n  \n“Stately and refined; one of Scotland’s most thoughtful indie rock outfits” – The Skinny \n  \n“Lyrical depth\, musicianship of the highest quality.” – The Herald
