Winter Sowing with Hudson County Native Plant Society

March 1 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join a hands on workshop with the Hudson County Native Plant society to start your Winter sowing.

This is a hands-on workshop about winter sowing – a low-cost, easy way to start seedlings outdoors using recycled containers as mini-greenhouses. Winter sowing allows seeds to go through cold-stratification (necessary for germination), while giving the seeds some protection from animals and the elements. It’s a great way to get lots of seedlings for cheap, and it’s a good method for starting native plants, most of which need to go through cold-stratification to germinate.

Attendees should bring empty, clean milk jugs. Other similar, large containers will do, such as soda bottles. Containers need to have enough space for 3 inches of soil, and a few inches above for the seedlings to grow. We will also bring some extra jugs and containers!

We will prep the containers at the event – cutting around and adding holes for drainage and ventilation, and then fill with soil and a choice of seeds.
We’ll bring a variety of native seeds, including several milkweed varieties, and attendees are also welcome to bring their own.
